Remembering Krist Angielen Guzman

Guzman was born in the Philippines, and her name, Krist Angielen, is a nod to her birthday a few days after Christmas — and a combination of the first names of her parents, Angel and Lillie Castro.

The family moved a lot during her childhood due to her father’s career in the U.S. Navy. She lived in Japan and California before she attended high school in Iceland, when her dad was stationed there at a naval base.

“She taught me everything, from driving to makeup to hair and music,” said her sister Kayla Clayton, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, who is 10 years younger. “She taught me how to treat people and to always be honest and loyal and not to be scared if I had something to say.”

Clayton said her sister loved Justin Timberlake’s music throughout her life. She described her sister as the glue that held her family together.
